Polyester is a plastic fiber that absorbs the oily compounds from your skin. Bacteria feed on those compounds to create synthetic stink.
A 2024 University of Alberta study found polyester absorbed and released the most odor compounds of five fibers tested, and held its odor intensity longest. That is the shirt you smell at baggage claim.
Plastic fibers block airflow and vent only through gaps in the knit. Recirculated cabin air and a warm gate area turn a synthetic shirt into a layer you cannot cool down in.
Conventional polyester sheds microfibers as you wear it and carries whatever finish the mill applied. Your first layer deserves the same standard as your water.

Every HyperNatural fabric is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, so the finished textile, dyes included, has been tested against published limits for harmful substances.
Polyester does not absorb the water in sweat; it absorbs the oily compounds that carry odor, and its surface favors the bacteria that break them down. A 2024 University of Alberta study found polyester held odor intensity longest of five fibers tested. HyperNatural shirts are made with Supima® cotton and Hyper-Chitin, a natural antimicrobial from crab shells, which cuts odor-causing bacteria by 99%.
That is what it is built for. The 99% reduction in odor-causing bacteria comes from chitin in the fiber, not a finish that washes out, so a polo worn on the flight is fresh enough for dinner the next night. Hang it up overnight and pack one less shirt.
Less than plain cotton. The Pinehurst is a featherweight jersey and the El Capitán shirt is a micro-pique knit with a small amount of Creora® Regen recycled spandex, so they recover their shape when you shake them out. There is no wrinkle-resistant resin finish on any HyperNatural fabric.
Yes, on the skin. Hyper-Cool Jade® embeds jade minerals in a cellulose fiber that conducts heat away from your body, and the fabric is 20x more breathable than polyester, so the shirt runs up to 5° cooler to the touch. It will not change the cabin temperature, but it stops the shirt from holding heat against you.
For most trips, the Pinehurst Classic Fit Jersey Polo: it is the lightest polo, packs flat and works from the plane to a restaurant. Add the El Capitán Classic Fit Micro-Pique Shirt if the trip includes meetings or cooler evenings, and the Topanga Featherweight Crewneck Tee as the layer under everything. All three are made with Supima® cotton and Hyper-Cool Jade®, with 0% virgin polyester.
