Break Up With Your Gym Tee - Polyester is Plastic
Listen, I've spent 30 years inside this clothing industry. I've probably seen this story a thousand times. People love to but performance functions like "quick dry," "wrinkle free," “cooling.” Most of the time these are synthetic fiber blends all in the name of “performance.” How did we get sold the last 20 years that if it's not plastic, it's not technical? Nobody seems to really questions it. Times are changing.
Consumers need to start reading clothing labels. It's the ingredients for what you wear. Usually when skin when irritation shows up or you discover you have a chronic disease, or maybe someone mentions microplastics building up in your bod. Most people don’t accept that feeling your skin has been telling you for years.
Time to realize the truth - polyester, nylon is really plastic. And the industry knows this, but they don’t really want you asking deeper questions. Clothing supply chains are global, complicated and lightly regulated. Nobody can easily trace which chemical came from where or it's difficult to hold people accountable when there's are health issues.
So let’s try something different. Start by looking at what's in your closet. Start only buying shirts using natural or bio-based ingredients. No sheen, no cling. No smell.
- Cotton
- Wool
- Linen
- Hemp
- HyperNatural
See how it feels compared to your old stuff and wear only natural for a month. Then go back and try on your old plastic stuff. See how your skin reacts. You likely will feel itchy, crawly, uncomfortable. You can't go back once your skin resets.
